To remove anti-virus and security completely you need to do following things.

1) Dont keep the intenet on coz you might get some worms, trojans, spywares or viruses

2) Turn off security and antivirs by right clicking on antivirus or sercurity on taskbar near clock. Find exit or shut of option and turn it off or press ctrl + alt + delete and task manager will appear. You can end process from there too.

3) Go to control panel then add remove programs and find your security and antivirus and uninstall it and reboot computer.

4) You can go to c:\program file\xxx This xxx is your antivirus folder you can delete that too.

5) Click on Start -%26gt; Run -%26gt; Type regedit -%26gt; press enter. Click on edit and find tab. Type your antivirus name and click on find you will get his subkeys or binary values. You can delete them too!!! COMPLETELY!!!

here's my story. My other PC, we had the trial for CA Security (i think that's what it's called), but then the trial expired so my mom decided to pay for it online, so she did, and next day, my computer pretty much died and never worked again ... so. I got a new laptop, and it came with Norton Antivirus (trial again i think ... maybe, not sure) but the thing I DON'T LIKE is that when i run a scan, it REALLY slows down my computer. Is there an antivirus that'll do it's job and scan my computer without slowing it down TOO MUCH? I don't want to wreck this brand new laptop thanks haha.

You should only realy have one "active"* antivirus on a computer at a time, not only will adding another slow your system down, but it can cause errors/crashes... this is due to the fact that a).you have two things trying to do one thing at the same time, or b). both programs try to "back up" file tables to different locations, or (quite commonly) c). one program may see the other as a virus...

so if you want to install a new AV program, you should uninstall the old (provided both programs are active*)

*I'm not sure if active is the proper term to use, but what I mean by it, is that the AV program is actively scanning, or in otherwords, scanning as you go, like say for example, you open a word document, and (somewhere durring the opening process) it displays a "word has requested a virus scan of (insert document name here).doc"... that is active scanning... but not all programs are like that, for example in my case, I have Clam AV (free, you can get it here: http://www.clamwin.com/ ), and norton both installed, but that is ok, because norton is the only "active" program, since clam only scans when you tell it to (and for e-mail), and I am pretty sure it doesn't copy file tables... anyways, I use clam for scanning every 2-4 months, and norton stops all the little things (like all the nasty floppy disk viruses)...

Yes. Now my Registry is all mesed up and my computer crashes at least once a day. No I don't have loads of spyware, viruses or pop-ups. Every time you ahve problems with e-mail, you can almost bet it's Norton messing around. When I get a new computer, I'm going to switch to something different.

I think ClamWin is pretty good. It's one of the only open source antivirus programs (like firefox is an open source web browser). That means many developers can freely contribute, leading to generally faster bug and security hole fixes.

There are many solid AV options, both commerical and free downloads.

Of the free Antivirus software, Avira has the best detection but lacks e-mail scanning. It's a good choice for systems without a local e-mail client (or people who used web-based email like gmail, yahoo etc- services which include their own scanning)

AVG Free Edition remains very popular and includes e-mail scanning but is middle-of-the-pack at detecting threats. Avast! is another popular free AV scanner.

Yes, you definately need antivirus, you can use a program such as Nod32 or AVG and they both work great. I also recommend having an Antispyware solution, that may help you out. Vista is more secure, but in time there will be vulnerabilities that Antivirus software should help to minimize.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. Delete Mcafee first through add and remove software on your control panel. You will mess up your computer if you have both running.

get into control panel,click on add/remove programs,you will see a list of applications currently installed on your PC.

Click on McAfee once, then click on uninstall/remove.

Once that task is completed,restart the machine and install AVG antivirus.

If you install AVG without removing Mcafee first then you will find your system will become very slow, it might not boot into windows at all, if you want to install AVG first remove Mcafee then install AVG

They do daily but AV companies patch their data base daily as well. The thing is that most virus writers are simply cutting and pasting existing code ergo the volume of worm based viruses that can easily be contained via heuristic scanning.

The companies who make antivirus software have special unprotected servers which deliberatley get infected to detect new variants.

That way they can find fixes and generate new virus databases, usually on a daily basis.

I would not recommend AVG Grisoft. (you have to run it manually and it doesn't give full service unless you pay )

A few years ago I got turned on to Comodo..They are a leading security company and also offer a freeware anti virus, I love it because it gives 24hr full protection. You don't have to buy it to get all the features. I also use their freeware firewall and boclean. They all run on start up and I haven't had a problem.

The free ones work as good as the "brand names" for protecting against viruses IF you keep them updated. However many of the brand name ones also block spyware, spam, include a firewall etc. They offer more features. With the free ones, you usually have to run five or six programs to get all the features. (But they are all free too). So its price versus ease...

u do not need anti-virus software, macs do not get vireses or spyware or adware. macs dont get any of that "bad stuff".
Viruses and spyware were created for stealing data, hacking the computers and sending spam emails.. So makers of viruses target the widely used Windows Operating system, not Macs.. To say clearly, viruses are not compatible with Mac.

Some questions you need to answer first.

1) Do you want to pay for the program? There are free anti-virus programs out there.

go to www.trendmicro.com and use the free antivirus scan. if that doesent work try spybot. Manually removing a virus isnt very easy. you have to get every part of it which would take forever to manually find all of it.

FDISK the harddrive and remove the partitions, recreate and reformat drive (low level) than reload operating system.

Try rebooting your computer in safe mode. (Google on how to do this if you don't know how) then run your virus program. If this doesn't work, you're in for a long process. But don't give up on it. You'll get it.

AVG virus software is Free version software..
AVG has poor detection rates. The free version does not come with the ewido engine that is part of the pro version. it doesn't shape up well against other free products, and should be avoided if you want to the best protection for your machine. How do you know there's a hacker in your computer. The easiest way to prevent this anymore is to format your hard drive and reinstall everything. First off there's no reason for someone to specifically target your computer unless you have some special information they're trying to access. physically pull the net connection, then run anti virus scan for any trojan software or viruses. Run ad-aware (from download.com) this removes spyware.

Reconnect to internet with windows firewall turn on (xp+vista) or reinstall zonealarm.

My Abacus is running Cif Oxygel anti Virus and it works very well, but I'm still rebuilding the Babbage after the ensuing crash from a previous infection!

Jokes aside, I still have a computer running 3.1.5 , one running 95 and one running 98. As well as four running XP Pro and XP MPE.

In storage, I also have one that runs on BASIC from DOS. All of them work fine and out of all of them I think that 3.1.5 and 95 where the most stable platforms I have owned!

Keep up the good work and don't bow down to pressure. If you do buy a new PC, keep the old one running for nostalgia. Also great for running all of the old games on. You could say its the ultimate Emulator.

i don't think so as windows 95 is so old now, you will need to upgrade your windows, you can get upgrade disc's on ebay but make sure they have the CD key with it.

In this day and age why are you even running 95? You can get 98 for like a fiver or even ME for very cheap. Once Vista is out (Jan 07) XP is going to go really cheap as well.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. i agree to andrew to an extent, but some av's like norton or mcafee can be notoriously tough to remove. that may be a problem. bitdefender 8 is a free version that you can try and yes it is pretty good. the best antivirus in terms of performance i have seen is nod32, works pretty damn good even on older computers but unfortunately only has a 28 day trial period and is not free. an antivirus shouldnt use all your computers ram, its an addon. avast is another good one and is free too, no avg's and kapersky's plz

if ur worried about what they download i suggest having different user accounts on ur comp, with urs password protected and the only one thats an administrator. then make their limited and they wont be able to install everything. this will allow you to keep on top of ur comps security by scanning once a week to get out all the stuff that finds its way on there. i recomend AVG anti virus from www.download.com. also get windows defender, spybot SD and adaware 2007.

agree with the first poster...just get one AV in the system.
It's a very bad idea as each antivirus won't be able to do it's job as well as it should be....they will conflict adn crash your system.
it's not safe as they will conflict with each other and cause tons of issues. you are much safer with 1 antivirus, such as AVG Free Edition for example.
The Answer is NO. it will not. Reason? well, say your a security guard who just put up your security systems, cameras, etc. Then comes along some stranger who also puts his security system up, and in the process tears some of yours down. Then he detects you as an intruder and tries to kick you out of the building. With a computer, its the same idea, if u put in 2 antivirus softwares on your computer, they will most likely see eachother as viruses, because one will make major changes to the computer as security measures, while the other does it a different way and sees the first as a threat because its changing the system. They will be conflicting, so be warned! Also, why would you use two? they just take up more space and ram on your computer...stick to one, its better then two.
I believe 2 will be okey for each one arrests different kinds of virus not checked by the other anti virus software.

trojans and worms are hard to get out of viruses, but you probably already new this since your computer just shuts down with out warning. i had the same problem with my emachine, it was my first computer( now i have a hp pavillion dv5600 laptop) and i downloaded so much crap on it that whenever i turned on, the starting up windows screen would just stay there tho whole time .. it was horrible... i took it to a neighbor who is a genius at computers and put in the clean out disk. i forget what its really called, but, it should come with your computer. you put it in the cd drive and it clears everything out of your computer .. so anything you have will be gone, it will be like having a new computer ... if you dont want to do that, go to best buy or circuit city and ask for theirt strongest virus protection and spyware adware trojan worm ect. detection programs. it will cost money, but if you want those stupid viruses gone, get them.

First, reboot the pc into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key as the pc starts up. Once in safe mode, go to the Control Panel, and then "Add or Remove Programs", and delete AVG. Then, reboot and install the AVG from the install program you downloaded. Hope this helps.

Antivirus programs scan the files before the operating system can open them. This means a file has to be opened by the antivirus program so it can be scanned. While the file is opened, no other program can access it until the scanning is complete and the file is closed.

If multiple antivirus programs are running, they all try to scan the file at the same time and this leads to errors.
If you scan with one and the other one is not disable you will have MAJOR problems with your computer. Mine locked up and I had to reformat my Hard Drive to fix it. Do not try it for your own good. I think they conflict because they take each other's virus databases as viruses. Good Luck

Try a online antivirus scanner and a online anti-adware/malware/spyware scanner in safe mode with network to clean up your computer.

Disable "System Restore" for Windows Me and XP, then restart your PC to clean your system restore points for viruses, spyware, adware etc.

An anti-virus software is just another application (like MS Word, Internet Explorer etc.) and in Windows environment VC++ could be a good tool for developing it. When it comes to Windows Vista I think C# would be more preferable as Microsoft is using C# for all new applications and there would be better compatibility.

Here is an example, I do not have internet at home, and I go to school and download files there, then I come home and put those files on my computer that does not hook to the internet, I MIGHT need a virus scanner in case those files have viruses in them, if a person does not use the Internet AT ALL then there is no reason to have a virus scanner.
You dont need antivirus for a computer that doesnt receive outside info from dvd, cd , memory sticks or the internet.

it is probably just a setting. from a blank spot on your desktop, right click and select properties, select the setting tab on the colors section pick True Colors and on the screen area select more. I set mine to max but you may like is somewhere in the middle.

I went onto broadband and took security cover through BT/Yahoo. I have now paid for 2 security items. How can I obtain a refund from Symantec for the first item which would not register on my computer. Symantec are good at taking my money but poor on assisting when there is a problem. When you take out an annual subscription for Norton anti-virus it is an annual subscription. If you have technical problems installing their anti-virus then contact their technical support.
norton is crap. get avast.

norton does not recognize new viruses, in fact i had norton before and my computer was shutting down by itself, then i did a thorough virus scan with avast and found 8 trojan horses that norton never recognized.
