There are many solid AV options, both commerical and free downloads.
Of the free Antivirus software, Avira has the best detection but lacks e-mail scanning. It's a good choice for systems without a local e-mail client (or people who used web-based email like gmail, yahoo etc- services which include their own scanning)
AVG Free Edition remains very popular and includes e-mail scanning but is middle-of-the-pack at detecting threats. Avast! is another popular free AV scanner.
Of the commerical products, Kapersky and NOD32 are currently the top performers.
Norton has completely redone their AV software so that current versions don't slow computers to a crawl like older releases. Both Norton and McAfee are "name-recognition" brands- they used to be the best in the biz for many years, but aren't the top dogs any more.
