There are a number of possibilities.

I like AVG and Spybot - Search and Destroy.

Keep the AVG running all of the time.

Use Spybot to "immunize" your machine and perform occasional scans.

My sister tried the free stuff and eventually had to take her computer to a professional who said she had over FOUR THOUSAND VIRUSES AND ADDWARE AND FREEWARE. I buy Norton every year. 40 bucks isnt too much to pay for your computer's safety.
