If you buy a really good anti-virus program, such as NOD32 or Kaspersky, it will take care of most malware, including spyware.

If you are going to buy an anti virus, i would highly reccomend, CA antivirus sweet, for many reasons such as that it does not expire. If you purchase norton, you find your self having to spend more and more money on upgrades and such. You also have to renew your subscription over a 2 or 3 year time span. Sometimes when you get a virus, the virus attacks your operating system. You get to the point where you see the beginning of windows, but that's as far as it goes. If that is the case, most at that point will have to go to their local tech and recover their data and re-load the operating system-generally about $99. If you cannot see windows at all, you may have a more serious problem with your bios or mother board. Based on what you describe, it appears you received a virus and while trying to remove it, it was able to complete the mission given by the creator of the virus. Other than that, you should be OK.

I would recommend AVG for the anti-virus and Zone Alarm for the firewall. See links below. People will have all sorts of explanations and/or reasons to recommend different applications and MOST will be fine, but the proof is in the pudding as they say: these are used by MILLIONS across the world. Using ONLY the Microsoft firewall in XP is not enough and quite frankly not very efficient. Keep in mind that those who recommend McAfee or Norton are forgetting that you will have TO PAY for those applications after the trial period. AVG is free at all times.

Added comment: Norton is a hog on RAM while AVG is not and you do not lose speed, actually you can hardly notice that an AV is running in the background. Avast is also a good choice. My criteria when choosing software is this: How easy is it to install, use, update and how good is it at doing its job? Both have met all the criteria.

I use the Firefox browser instead of IE and it seems to help quite a bit as the browser has an automatic pop-up blocker built in. (Tools --%26gt; Options --%26gt; Content)

Also, you can go to Start --%26gt; Run --%26gt; type in "msconfig" --%26gt; click OK --%26gt; click Startup tab --%26gt; delete some of the things you don't want to pop up every time you start your computer. This has helped my computer speed up quite a bit.

You didn't say if you use Internet Explorer, Firefox, or another one. But, in most it will be Tools%26gt;Options then look for an entry called home page. Then, change it to whatever you like, e.g. google.com, yahoo.com, etc.

If it is not just that, then you might have spyware or a virus. So run one of the many free tools like Spybot for spyware and Bitdefender for anti-virus.

You need more than just antivirus software which AVG or avast! will do just fine, but also you may want to look at firewalls as well. a little common sense(not being stupid), and a decent firewall and you'd never need anti-virus. every windows computer ive ever setup has never had anti-virus on it, ive always just used a good firewall, and i've never had a problem with viruses.

Your description is not very precise, but it suggests that you have the CommWarrior.Q virus (see the link below for removal instructions and for a more precise description). If this is the case, the removal instructions given by the previous answerer will *not* work for you - they are for the early CommWarrior variants.

Variant .Q is much more tenacious - it infects memory cards, SIS files, prevents its process from being terminated and so on. So, please follow the removal instructions given on the page pointed by the link below.

Nod32 is one of the worlds best anti-virus programs, but it is just that... an anti-virus.

An anti-virus does NOT deal with e mail spam.

There are separate e-mail spam filtering programs to deal with spam. Most e-mail providers have some spam filtering at the server level. Actually Yahoo does a pretty decent job of spam filtering for their e-mail customers. Of course one must use Yahoo as their mail provider.

Don't expect an anti-virus app of any kind to filter spam, it is simply NOT its job!

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from download.com I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You may be able to remove it by going into Safe Mode, then running a virus scan.

Reboot your computer, and just when Windows starts to load, press F8 (a few times). You should get a dos-looking menu. Select Safe Mode (which is probably already highlighted) and press Enter.

Windows will look pretty ugly - Safe Mode loads only the critical drivers to get it running, which doesn't include Video so it's in 640x480, 256 colors. And it will say Safe Mode in all 4 corners of the screen.

At any rate, what I would do is find this file and delete it immediately. Then I would start Norton and scan the computer - make sure you set it to scan everything, not just specific file types.

This time it should be able to clean out the virus as the file shouldn't be loaded anywhere. Once it's done the scan, reboot and you should be back in business.

Macs come with firewalls built in. This is part of the operating system and it is a pretty good and solid system to protect your machine.

I have run Macs and PCs for over 15 years now and have not yet had a Mac succumb to a single virus.

But run Adaware and other anti-virus protection for the PCs I have on a daily/weekly basis. I have lost two entire systems due to corruption caused by trojan viruses and I have been billed by a company for viruses which rerouted my phone! On a PC of course.

McAfee used to have a free version but I think it now only offers a free trial period like most reputable antivirus software/companies. Most of these companies also offer from their websites free scans of your computer without installing any software.

As for commercially available, I would stick with the well known companies that will stand behind their product and give you decent support if needed. E.G. Norton AntiVirus, McAfee Virus Scan, and CA eTrust EZ Antivirus.

I have never run multiple anti-virus packages at the same time. I suspect some combinations will work but I would be hesitate to do this as this type of software is pervasive (i.e., installing and hooking into all parts of your system) and could cause more harm than help. If this is something you're set on doing I would strongly recommend you find or get in writing from each company that makes the software that you plan on running can indeed run simultaneously.

The best things to do to prevent viruses is somewhat hard to answer without knowing things like what type of e-mail application you use, your level of experience, etc. Starting with e-mail, the most common medium for viruses, you'll have better protection from e-mail viruses when using web based applications (e.g. Yahoo, Hotmail, and just about most major ISPs) vs. applications that are installed on your computer, such as Outlook or Outlook Express. Reason being the e-mail stays on their server vs. being loaded down on your computer. They get the virus not you. Also, be very cautious about opening ANY attachment. This is mostly common sense. If you don't recognize the sender and have no idea why you're getting the e-mail in the first place, don't even open the e-mail let alone the attachment. Don't forget to also delete the e-mail from your Trash can or Deleted folder. If you know the sender but not sure why there's an attachment, once again, don't open it. If you know for a fact why you're getting the e-mail AND the attachment, then and only then would I take the next step and that's use your antivirus software to scan it before opening it.

AVG is faster and will allow you to boot faster and use less RAM. Unfortunately, AVG has a very low detection rate compared to other antiviruses. Panda has a higher detection rate. I've never used it though so I'm not sure how it affects your boot speed or system resources. You should open your task manager to check.

Yep. Two things. First, all that antispyware/antivirus comes at a price... slower performance (particularly when you boot up or log on). The scanning of files, etc. eats performance, both in processor power and disk access. The tighter you make your security, the slower your system will run. Period. It's a bit like playing football. If you play without pads, you risk getting hurt. But if you put on 80 pounds of body armor, you'll never be much of a sprinter, no matter how much horsepower you have.

Second, over time, systems get bogged down with "extras"... TSR's (terminate but stay resident programs), browser "helpers", add on's, etc. Windows starts "services" by default that you may never use. Printer drivers or other hardware include programs to "check for updates"... the list goes on and on. All of these "conveniences" come at a price. Lower performance. Do you really need a HP program running in the background to check for updates every day? Or have Adobe Acrobat search several times daily? Pfft... drop these built-in "conveniences", and you drop tons of baggage.

If you insist, simply google it and they're all basically the same. I use McAfee which comes with a price, but it comes with full protection, though you have to pay for each type (spam blocker, anti-virus, etc.)

As Tofu said Norton is an overbloated piece of junk. Once installed on your system it then protects itself by measures that are not conducive to your computer. For instance, once the program has expired you will spend days or even months trying to rid yourself of all it's smaller programs that will continue to load up and do a call back to Norton everytime you turn on your computer. Nero is notorious for this as well.

I would use AVG7.5, Pandasoft, Avast, Housecall or many other more worthy virus detection systems before I'd ever even consider Norton.

And apparently Norton can and has been hacked quite a lot also recently. Once breached, it's defenses are completely useless against hackers.

Ubuntu's desktop install provides a bunch of useful software for desktop users, but it doesn't install a firewall by default.

The only reason you need Antivirus for is probably Windows. There was a proof of concept virus created for Linux a while ago:

Ubuntu has a firewall by default. It's called iptable, but it's a command line program. If you want to configure it, you may want to get Firestarter.

There's no need for spyware removal or antivirus as they don't exist (yet). They will still need to know your password before they can install or run anything. So as long as you stick to the repository (anything you get using add/remove, synaptic, apt-get, etc.), you'll be fine.

Best to have just one. Two antivirus means more memory reserved for these programs running in the background (System Processes, Services), the startup will take longer and you also probably noticed that the OS is running a bit slower too.

There is only one antivirus which you can use with any other antivirus program. It is called Clamwin . It is open source GPLed freeware available at sourceforge. And the reason why you can use it with other av programs is because it has no real time scanner. You have to run it manually whenever you want to check your HD for viruses.

These are known as SpyAxe, SpyFalcon, SpywareQuake, and there are now even more. If anyone was "lucky" - all they got ripped off for was the $30.

yes but most people would settle with 2, using 3 would slow u down alot. To the other commenters just 1 is not always enough, different anti-virus programs pick up some things others miss. If you trust your anti-virus program that much good for you, not recommend unless its a good one. BitDefender Free has no real time protection. Avast and AVG do. However both AVG and Avast have very poor virus detection rates. In tests they constantly miss about 10% of all viruses.

I would check out the free version of AntiVir.
i use bitdefender 9 and it is one of the best, much better than avg and avast, it updates nearly every hour and catches almost everything, it has been rated as one of the best on many sites.
