There are many free Anti-Virus (AV) programs available for free - including many that rival other expensive programs. One of the best is Grisoft AVG, the one I use on my own computer. It has consistently rated higher on independent tests (CNet, PC World) than many more expensive programs. I highly recommend this one.
There are also other free online scans - not software, but it uses the company's software to scan your computer for viruses. This scan is avaiable from McAfee and Norton/Symantec. Links are below.
In addition to AV software, it is important to have anti-spyware software on your computer as well. Spyware is just as threatening and devestating (if not more so) than viruses. For this, I recommend Spybot Search and Destroy. It is free, and I also use this on my computer. Another is Windows Defender, also free. However, if you use a Mac computer, you cannot use this.

Lava soft , free to down load and does a very good scan. I scan once a day you be surprised how many critical objects come up especially if you are wireless. Easy to scan away though.

AOL free suite from aol.com, written by Kaspersky, recent test it found 99.5% off virus's as opposed to avg 88.5% , however they are both good but i would go for aol and kaspersky!
