You need more than just antivirus software which AVG or avast! will do just fine, but also you may want to look at firewalls as well. A couple come to mind, ZoneAlarm being the more popular, while Kerio and Sygate are fairly more solid ones. Anti-Spyware's a must as well, which Ad-Aware and Spybot Search %26 Destroy tops the list. i have avg and it works great, you can try it free and then decide if you want to buy it.

The two best ones are free: AVG 7.5 (the latest version), and Avast Home. Personally, I use Avast and have for 3+ years, but AVG has the highest rating, and in a test, found more viruses than Norton, McAfee and the other expensive ones combined.
