Kaspersky is the MOST powerful anti-virus. It has the highest detection ratings out of all anti-virus softwares, but unfortunately it's subscription based.

For Free anti-virus: AVG by grisoft should be the best or Avast or Avira AntiVir both are good.
Well i use :

WEBROOT SPYWEEPER and ANTIVIRUS

and i download lots of stuff and i sweep the file before i use it and it deletes the bad things..
The two most highly rated are Avast 4 Home, and AVG 7.5. Both are free. Both update daily and will protect your computer and email. Personally I prefer Avast because I've had it on my computer for years and never had a virus get past it.

I find AVG 7.5 free is effective. It has isolated and cured virus in my computer on one/two occasions. Norton makes system slow but graded to be best.

I think AVG anti virus and Norton anti virus both r equally good. I am using AVG free ware up dated Evey day
