Free, Effective Anti-Spyware/Virus Software?

Spyware and Viruses have been the absolute bane of my computer life in the past, and I'd like to make a fresh start with the new computer I'm getting. Can anyone suggest a free anti-spyware/virus program that is actually effective? Thanks for your time.

Avg it's highly reccommended you can download it from download.com but if you want a different version google it there is a lot of sites to download it from. HOPE THIS HELP'S.
I like you also had problems with the viruses and but after downloading ADAWARE from lavasoft and NOD32 from ESET my computer has become as smooth as butter.
