Not sure about the best free one but the one I use is Spy Sweeper with anti-virus. It works wonders. It isn't expensive, I think maybe $30.
AntiVir Guard.

The free version is great. Since using it I never had a virus (and I have done scans with other programs to quadruple check. Its light weight and when it suspects a virus is being force downloaded to your computer, it blocks it (unlike many programs) and asks you if you want to let it continue (say NO). Its very good. The interface is hard since its pictures but is well worth it.

The only downside is that once a day something pops up on your screen asking to buy an other product. Click no. It won't bully you if you click no. It just pops up once a day. Then again, for free and great protection, clicking no isn't to hard. I full heartedly recommend it!
