Will someone tell me what the best free anti-virus etc software is/are?

I just downloaded one and it was rubbish with loads of pop-ups and stuff. I clearly don't know what I'm doing.

If you simply want a no-tension anti-virus and anti-spyware that will protect your computer effectively in the background without giving you much alerts and all, get these -

AVG Free

Windows Defender

Also, turn on the Windows Firewall from Control Panel if you have Windows XP or Windows Vista (if not, get Comodo Firewall from http://personalfirewall.comodo.com). AVG has everything automated by default, so you needn't worry. However, you may have to set Windows Defender to update it's definitions and scan your computer automatically.

Always use one anti-virus and one firewall at a time as more than one can cause driver conflicts.

These are some that I would recommended: avg-free, avast, and antvir. I use avast on my desktop and avg on my laptop. Try them out and see if you like them.
AVG and AVG anti-spyware, they pwn
I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. They can all be downloaded from the following link. http://www.computeractive.co.uk/... On the home page select downloads and then the appropriate category.I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly. Hope this helps.
I`ve used AVG free for years and never had any trouble with it...it updates ok too, regularly (make sure you get the latest version)
AVG is pretty good one as i know.
I've heard AVG is good. You can get a free download from downloads.com.
My ISP provides McAfee Security software for free - I think McAfee 'rules', btw. I used to use Norton Antivirus, which I think also 'ruled' (or at least back then [200] it did). Nothing gets past those two...absolutely nothing. Now as for free software, I am with everyone else - AVG 'rules'; I used that before Comcast gave us McAfee as a subscriber benefit.
