It's definitely personal preference, but here are some ideas, all of which are free. Just "google" them.

Don't go with just one. Anti spy software compliments each other. Not all programs delete all spys.

First get a good firewall: I recommend Zone Alarm

Second, get some anti-spys: Yahoo Anti Spy, Spybot S %26 D, Adaware and Ewido are all good. Get at least 2, 3 will not hurt. (I use all 4)

Lastly, get good Anti-Virus: AVG is excellent and free.

Run these weekly, checking for updates each time you run them. Should keep your system clean.

KASPERSKY software seems to have the highest rating and best reviews all around the web.
There is no way to 100% protect your computer except to do regular backups and be ready to reformat and reinstall.

I put an extra hard drive in mine just for this purpose and have already used it once.
A computer can never be 100% protected.
