Why did Norton Anti-Virus let viruses on to my computer?

had about a dozen on them last week and found them using Homecall or something, just wondered why did an Anti-Virus software do the opposite?

Had more or less the same months ago.........Norton subscription ran out so I loaded Avast Anti-virus which found 6 Virus programs (trojans%26keyloggers) that an up to date Norton could not detect.........I am sticking with (free) Avast and have had no problems since.

I assume that you have kept the Norton up to date by running Live Update at least every week. Remember that the Norton virus killer software can only act once their programmers actually know about Malware and have written a solution for it.

It's sad but the evil little shits who write these things will always be ahead of the Nortons and McAfee of this world. Someone has to be the unfortunate first victim.

It's likely that you have picked up spyware and possibly an autodialler or two as well as than 'ordinary' viruses.

You should install and use Windows Defender (free from Microsoft Downloads) and also something like SpyBot-Search and Destroy (also free download).
