A V G is said to be amongst the best. I use it on my computer and it automatically updates. Totally free to download
Yep I'm going with the majority here and say that AVG is a great free program.

Free AV? Well forget AVG....it's crap with a low detection rate for viruses.

If you insist on "free" anti virus go for Avira or Avast. These two are the best "freebies".

I have used this happily on many computers. However, it only offers anti-virus, not anti-spyware. For anti-spyware, I use Windows Defender, a free product from Microsoft:

This is the setup I have on my computer, and it works fine, except that Windows Defender seems obsessed with scanning every day. But a scan doesn't seem to slow the computer down much even on my slow computer, so it's not much of a problem.
