Avast Home edition is free and it works very well. I work in the IT community and my company uses avast to protect us from viruses and the home edition is identical to our product.

see what your internet provider has for free...most of them offer a free suite - anti-virus, anti-spam, etc. got to their homepage and do some investigation. They usually have at least limited support for this free product.
