A good anti virus is mcafee,a little bet costly but it work very well.

You'll get a virus that can eat your hard drive and then you'll either have to get a new computer or have yours fixed. If I didn't have virus protection my computer would be gone and I've only been online six months. My software tells me when it detects a virus.
Yes you can do everything just as well as if you had an anti-virus but if your PC suddenly stops working or you get spammed with pop-ups, you'll have a virus but there'll be nothing to tell you that you have one, and nothing to stop it.
