Do i need anti-virus/spyware for a mac?

alright so i plan to get my 2.4 Ghz macbook in may Yay! i know that macs don't let hidden files run ; this and many other things make macs ALMOST immune to viruses but should i still invest in virus protection? i have read posts on forums from people stating that it is only cuz Apple has less market share, but some still say that they got virus protection(to be sure) and it still has never found anything therefore they are not renewing it(anti-virus software). so basically, all the mac users out there, help me out with the experiences you have had! keep in mind that i will be using this on a college campus over a wireless network and also at home on a wireless network(+ places like caribou coffee and the like). the only reason i say this is because i hear that some wireless networks aren't encrypted and that would help me in getting a virus. thanx for all the help!

No, you don't need it. Whilst is is possible for any OS to get malware, currently only Microsoft Windows is plagued with the stuff. Systems like Mac OS X and Linux aren't plagued.
Like you mentioned, since the market share is so small, hackers don't bother with the Mac. If you want an AntiVirus, the same companies that make it for Windows, make it for the Mac.

i.e. Norton and McAfee
they just had a contest to see which OS was the most secure...Mac, windows, or linux. The Mac was hack before the windows system was.....
