Anti-Virus woes: can you help me ?

hey guys. I have an anti virus on my laptop. i downloaded AVG. it's been pretty good, but some friends tell me that they can't really detect that soon or is not too effective. I update AVG constantly (Every other day) and it seems pretty okay, for now.

My brother tells me Bit Defender (? did i get that right?) is better than AVG. i wouldn't know coz i've not seen it.

MY question to you guys is, what's the best Anti Virus software that i can get for free? or...download it for free?

your input is greatly appreciated!

KUDOS! God bless!

Just get Threatfire in addition to AVG. Since AVG uses only signature-based detection, new viruses may find their way onto your computer. For behavioral-based protection, Threatfire is a decent addition (but the free version is limited)

I've heard AVG doesn't have the greatest detection rate, however I've used it for a couple of years now and never had a virus. Just be careful with your surfing/downloading and you should be fine with AVG. Do a google search for free anti-virus comparison if you really want to know.
I have been using Zonealarm for ages and didn't have a problem i belivie there is a free one but i have Internet security and it has all spyware protection Firewall email protection ID protection IM security perantal control it's the best that i have had and i used all of the antivirus programs and this is the best that i have had my friend works for the company of you want i could ask him if he could hook you up with this software ;)
the best free antivirus are avira Antivir, Avast, and AVG

they are pretty much at the same level. some have more features than the other. better UI, better detection rates, etc

i personally like AntiVir the best out of the three. it is fast and effective

but the best antivirus according to me is the paid version of NOD32
